From the creator of Heartstopper comes this lovely coming-of-age story about a college freshman named Georgia, who spends her first year of college coming to an understanding about who she is and what that means.
As a fellow introvert, I thoroughly related to Georgia and some of her day-to-day struggles on that front. Sometimes, it’s just more fun to stay in and read, or watch YouTube, or play a game.
I also appreciated how we gradually see Georgia learning about herself and her sexuality. We see all of her thoughts and fears, and all are legitimate and believable. I also thought it was important to show Georgia and other asexual/aromantic individuals as they struggled with other people understanding and accepting them, including friends and family members.
The best thing about Loveless, though, is the friendships throughout the story. Georgia comes to university with two best friends from high school, but she finds other members to add to that social circle who help to complete her and give her a true sense of community.
There’s also a super fun little subplot where Georgia and her friends create a Shakespeare society. I loved the way they approached this task and had it come together despite some adversity and conflict in the group. It felt VERY much like something that could have happened during my college years.
While this is admittedly not my genre (romance? YA? something like that?), I found Loveless to be a cute, charming tale with sympathetic, kind characters. Honestly, it’s kind of cozy, which IS my cup of tea. Spend a little time with Georgia, Pip, Jason, Rooney, and Sunil. You won’t regret it.
